Cheap Date Idea: Build a Gingerbread House Together

Posted in Entertainment on December 3rd, 2009 by Dorothy – 1 Comment

gingerbread-houseAn age old tradition, Gingerbread is traced to Europe back to the 11th century. Crusaders returning from the Middle East and brought back a spice – ginger. The first gingerbread houses were made in Germany. Children story writer, Brothers Grimm, made them famous in the very popular fairy tale “Hansel and Gretel”. You may be thinking that building a gingerbread house is a childish thing to do but on the contrary, it can be a lot of fun and even romantic, in a silly way. You can go old school and bake your own gingerbread and buy candies at a bulk store or you can buy a gingerbread house kit that has everything ready to be assembled! If you want to learn the skills from some pros,  take your date to a Gingerbread House Workshop.

An Evening of Culture for Free!

Posted in Entertainment on November 16th, 2009 by Dorothy – Be the first to comment

toronto_opera2Want to take in a show or look at some art but strapped for cash? The Four Seasons Centre for Performing Arts is offering a free concert series during the lunch time and dinner time hours.  Concerts take place most Tuesdays and Thursdays at noon and the first Wednesday of each month at 5:30 p.m. These are non-ticketed events with a limited capacity. Seating is available on a first-come first-served basis when the doors open, a half hour before each performance.

Last Wednesday I enjoyed the Winter Celebrations across the Ages performance. The talented young artists of the Canadian Children’s Opera Company present a diverse program of various musical traditions celebrating winter through the centuries. The choir sang music from: Hildegard von Bingen, Giacomo and Puccini, They also sang traditional Christmas songs from North America, Europe, Middle and Far East. It was a great way to get into the festive spirit!

Following an evening concert, you can walk over to the Art Gallery of Ontario. There is no charge for admission on Wednesdays between 6:00pm and 8:30pm. Wednesdays are a great way to indulge in some culture without spending a penny- except maybe on some delicious hot chocolate to end the day!

Try…Brassaii

Posted in Entertainment on November 16th, 2009 by Dorothy – Be the first to comment

DSCN1514This past week I decided to have some lunch at Brassaii Bistro Lounge located at 461 King St. W. Brassaii was converted from a textile warehouse into a lounge. The result: a bright and airy space that allows you to focus on your dining experience. There isn’t a bad seat in the house. The restaurant hums to life with the younger, trendy crowd and professionals.  The menu is simple and the prices are modest.  My date and I both agreed that 8 oz prime rib beef burger with avocado salsa, white cheddar & Canadian bacon was the highlight of our meal. My date had the burger with a side of fries which he was disappointed to find were on the dry side. I had my burger with a salad that also was a bit bland, although the vinaigrette was quite good. Visually, the food is not presented in extraordinary ways but I will admit that Brassaii selects quality ingredients in their menu. Overall, it was a pleasant experience. The service was good and the environment was pleasant. The lunch hour wasn’t chaotic at all but dinner apparently is so a reservation is recommended.
